Western Kenya has a whole world of attraction from rolling hills and waters of Lake Victoria to ancient mysterious historical heritages. The only balanced stone standing on earth in western Kenya is Kit Mikayi, a scenic wonder to the eye of tourists. It is believed and worshipped by the Luo as a place of God. Bison Safaris Limited cordially presents to you this Breathtaking Kit Mikayi Tour an opportunity to explore and be enlightened with the myths, history, scenic beauty and other attractions of the “lake region”.
The Legend of the “First Wife”
Kit Mikayi (Dholuo for the Stone of the First Wife) is a formation of rocky outcrops approximately 120m high, some 4 km from east to west, and 2 km from north to south. It is roughly 29 kilometers west of Kisumu City. According to local lore, the stones tell the story of an elderly man named Ngeso, who was captured by the beauty of Mikayi and spent most of his days in the caves within its rocky body. Asked by his neighbors where his husband was, the wife would reply that he had gone to see his first wife (Mikayi).
Legend has it that the arrangement of rocks depicts a traditional Luo polygamous family; each boulder representing the first wife, second wife Nyachira, third wife Reru, and the house of the first-born son, Simba. The tours are guided by experienced personnel from Bison Safaris. The shrine remains a place of extreme devotion to the Legio Maria sect. It is also where elderly people conduct sacrifices to their God to plead for rain or good harvest.
