Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is located in western Uganda, about 30 kilometers east of the town of Mbarara and around 240 kilometers west of the capital city, Kampala. It was originally set up as a controlled hunting area in 1933. Later, in 1963, it became a game reserve, and finally, in 1983, it was declared a national park. The creation of this park led to the displacement of local Banyankole pastoralists, causing conflicts and various challenges related to wildlife management.
The park covers an area of about 370 square kilometers and is characterized by its beautiful rolling hills, open savannah grasslands, and important wetlands. Lake Mburo, which is part of the park, is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of only 5 meters. This lake is a significant ecological feature of the region and plays a vital role in the local environment.
The communities that surround the park are mainly made up of the Banyankole ethnic group. These people engage in various activities such as farming, fishing, and raising livestock. Fishing in Lake Mburo is particularly important for the livelihoods of the local residents, as it provides them with food and income, making it a crucial part of their daily lives.
